Where are we headed at The Linguist? With the evolution of The Linguist system and now with the enthusiastic participation of all of you on Vox we are approaching a vision that was in my book 3 years ago. You can have a look at www.thelinguist.blogs.com. where I have posted excerpts in five languages. We have not changed our basic concept, but the means of delivering it are getting more exciting all the time.
Our goal is to take advantage of the power of the Internet to create a powerful "convivial learning community" covering the whole world and all languages.
Things are evolving quickly so it is a bit of a moving target. Some of the obvious benefits of the Internet are
1) Ability to distribute and access multimedia information at low cost without reference to geography. Call it the iTunes model. We will use that.
2) Ability to customize features, learning content, learner profiles, activity records, achievement records etc. not just to proficiency levels, but right down to individual learners. We use that.
3) Ability to find the exact quality of service and product at the best price from anywhere in the world. The elance model. We use that.
4) Ability to offer product customized to customers evolving interests. The amazon model. We use that.
5) Ability to conduct auctions. The eBay model. We use that.
6) Ability to build communities of people with similar interests. We use that.
We are all participating in an exciting experiment!
